  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces maraschino cherries (halved, reserve juice)
  • red decorating sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons water (if needed)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 Tablespoon maraschino cherry juice
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2-3 Tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and ¾ cup powdered sugar until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
  3. In another bowl, mix all-purpose flour, ground almonds, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients until combined.
  4. Take about 1 tablespoon of dough, create a pit in the middle, place a halved cherry inside, and fold dough over to form a ball. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Bake for 8-9 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Allow to cool on a wire rack.
  6. For the glaze, combine powdered sugar, maraschino cherry juice, almond extract, and milk until desired consistency is reached. Dip cooled cookies into the glaze and decorate with red sugar.
