Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup butter, melted or room temperature

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line an 8×8 baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a stand mixer, cream the unsalted butter until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add sugar, vanilla extract, and salt; mix until combined. Gradually incorporate flour to form a dough.
  3. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden.
  4. Combine sliced apples, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl; toss to coat.
  5. For the crumble topping, mix remaining flour with brown sugar and cut in melted butter until crumbly.
  6. Remove crust from the oven; increase temperature to 350°F (175°C). Layer half of the crumble over the crust, add apple mixture on top, then sprinkle remaining crumble over apples.
  7. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown on top. Allow bars to cool completely before slicing.
