  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 22–25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan until golden brown; then whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla bean paste.
  7. Once bars are cool, pour glaze over them and allow to set before slicing.
